Fukubukuro is known as “lucky bag” in Japan. It is derived from the two words, fuku (福 "good fortune" or "luck”) and fukuro (袋 “bag”). The latter part of the word was changed from fukuro to bukuro because of a Japanese phenomenon called rendaku. These lucky bags would be filled with excess inventory as a way of starting the New Year with good fortune. The belief comes from a saying, “there is fortune in leftovers” (残り物には福がある), which is also where the fuku in fukubukuro comes from. The bags would be filled with random items priced at discounted rates.
